Hosted by Rico Gagliano, the first season of the MUBI Podcast focuses on movies that have great importance in their home country, but are lesser known by international audiences and critics.

We begin with the unlikely tale of Paul Verhoeven’s infamous second feature TURKISH DELIGHT and its unique significance during the counterculture movement in 1970s Holland. Featuring exclusive interviews with Paul Verhoeven, Monique van de Ven, and Jan de Bont.

Future episodes will cover film stories from around the globe, including the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema, a Mexican film that became the biggest movie in the Soviet Union, and the micro-budget feature shot on video that sparked the modern Nigerian film industry.

MUBI is a global streaming service, production company and film distributor. A place to discover and watch beautiful, interesting, incredible films. A new hand-picked film arrives on MUBI, every single day. From iconic directors, to emerging auteurs. All carefully chosen by MUBI’s curators.

[Rico Gagliano] The Netherlands, my favourite country.[Laidback guitar music] Home to more bikes than people, a modest land of small homes, where people drink beer out of small glasses, but also a country where, in 1973, a quarter of the population went crazy for a film... that sounded like this.[Music concludes][Man grunts, punches land; Yelping][Baby wails][Man shouts][Car accelerates; Yelling][Crash]- [Rico] How does that work?- [Spirited guitar music] I'm Rico Gagliano and on June 3rd, the curated streaming service MUBI, the best place to catch beautiful and often mind-blowing movies from across the planet invites you to join me for... the MUBI Podcast, a front row seat to the great stories behind great movies. This first season, it's a trip around the world as I dive into films that were monster hits in one country and nowhere else. We'll make stops in India, Brazil, Nigeria, and we're starting, yes, in the Netherlands with the Dutch classic Turkish Delight, a crazy erotic melodrama made in a very different time...[Woman] Complete freedom. You know, I didn't put on a bathrobe between takes.[Rico] ..in a country going through some very big changes...[Man] From town hall, the carriage goes to West Church and smoke bombs explode along the route.[Rico] And a movie that blew millions of Dutch minds.[Man] We were stunned when the movie came out. I mean, over, like, four months, five months, the lines were still around a block. That had never happened before in Holland.[Rico] It's a crash course on another culture through the lens of a film that broke all the rules, featuring the voices of the people who made it.[Paul Verhoeven] Anyhow, my name is Paul Verhoeven and I'm the director of a Dutch film called Turkish Delight.[Rico] The premiere of the MUBI Podcast, your audio atlas to a world of great cinema.
